Marie in her own words..
Marie DeRosa ~ Champion du Monde
I have returned from St. Johann in Tirol, Austria – the site of the UCI Road Masters World Championships. I was there to compete for the “gold” with some 2000+ cyclists from all nations.
My first event was the 20K Time Trial on August 24. Amidst the surrounding mountains, I was positioned on the starting ramp, listening to the count down …
5 . 4 . 3 . 2 . 1 . GO ! The “little one with the big engine” had been set free. After passing a few of my rivals, more fuel was added to my fire. I smoked my nearest competitor by 52 seconds, the rest … by minutes. I became the 2005 World Masters Time Trial Champion.
The 40K Road Race was held the following day, August 25. I had specific instructions from my coach, Deirdre Murphy (Olympian and many times over Masters National and World Road Race Champion), on how to proceed: be in the break on the first climb and think PODIUM finish. I listened. 3rd Place was mine.
As if having placed well in these world-class races wasn’t enough, the awards ceremonies in St. Johann were another, ethereal high. They were held nightly in a spectacular setting. All I can liken it to is what I have seen for the Olympics:
• Large, outdoor stage with flood lights and brightly burning torch
• Red carpet leading up to the podium places
• Spectators filling the Town Square which is enveloped with flags of all nations
• Huge screen on the side to project images of winners
• The dignitaries of cycling and government making presentations
So, on the night of August 24, 2005, my name is announced – Marie DeRosa, 1st Place, World Masters Time Trial Champion, USA. I bolt up the red-carpeted stairs to my place of honor. I am wearing my Sanchez/Metro CRCA team uniform. The American flag is hoisted as our national anthem is played. I am awarded the Rainbow jersey of Champions, the Gold Medal and a trophy that is almost as big as I am… I feel overwhelmingly proud to be representing my country and my team. I now understand the tears of joy.
Not one to sit on my laurels, I have already planned my major goal for next season:
• Defend my title as World Masters Time Trial Champion
• Go for #1 in the World Masters Road Race
Cheers,
Marie
